About This Event

From Silence to Support – An Evening on Suicide

The Global Indian Organisation (GIO) Chapter Suriname is hosting a public lecture on Monday, August 17, 2026, entitled “From Silence to Support – An Evening on Suicide Prevention.”

With this gathering, GIO aims to help break the stigma surrounding suicide and encourage greater public dialogue about mental health. The organization emphasizes the importance of recognizing concerning warning signs at an early stage, maintaining open communication, and looking out for one another.

Suicide is a profound social and public health issue that affects not only individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts, but also their families, friends, colleagues, and society as a whole. By sharing knowledge, raising awareness, and creating a respectful and safe space to discuss this sensitive subject, GIO seeks to contribute to an environment in which people are better able to recognize warning signs, feel comfortable reaching out to one another, and know where to find appropriate support.

During the lecture, expert guest speakers will discuss the causes and risk factors associated with suicidal behavior, how to recognize warning signs, and how family members, friends, colleagues, and the wider community can provide meaningful support. Attention will also be given to the importance of empathy, connection, and having compassionate conversations with someone who may be going through a difficult time.

Through this initiative, GIO Chapter Suriname reaffirms its commitment to social responsibility and to promoting well-being, social connection, and mental health. GIO believes that greater awareness, early recognition, and open dialogue can contribute to a society in which people look out for one another sooner and no one has to feel alone.

GIO warmly invites everyone to attend this important evening and join in creating a society where mental health can be openly discussed and where we care for one another.
